7 days in Suffolk

Thanks for coming to check out our 7 days in Suffolk blog.

We’ve just returned from 7 wonderful days in beautiful Suffolk. We were really impressed by this beautiful, rural, clean County. I could happily just drive around looking at the beautiful thatched houses (Dave was blown away by some of the vegetable patches we passed!) Green Flag have a great blog here on drives around Suffolk.

Where did we stay in Suffolk?

Hoseasons, Wolverstone Marina a great way to spend 7 days in Suffolk
The Marina was a few minutes walk from our Hoseasons Lodge

We stayed at a small Hoseasons Park called Wolverstone Marina Lodge Park.

This Hoseasons Park is part of Wanderwood Lodge Holiday Collection, nestled in 22 acres of tranquil woodland beside the River Orwell.

We stayed in Bramble Lodge which was a two bed, two bath lodge. There was a big decking space and a hot tub (this wasn’t in use when we were there due to Covid, but hopefully soon it will be as that would have been the icing on the cake!)

It was about a 5 minute walk down to Woolverstone Marina which offers fantastic riverside views, a bar and restaurant and small children’s play area. There’s not tonnes of stuff for kids to do at this park, but there’s plenty of space to ride their bikes and the lodge was really child friendly.

For the first week of the Summer holidays it cost us £1175 for the week for 4 of us.

Lavenham

Lavenham might actually be the prettiest village I’ve ever seen. Heralded as the best preserved medieval village in Britain, there are timber framed buildings at every turn. It also has a rich history, being the 14th richest town in Tudor England thanks to its famous Lavenham Blue broadcloth.

It’s still a thriving town today with lovely independent shops, restaurants and pubs and the gorgeous National Trust Guild Hall which allows you to see the interior of a medieval building.

There was a sizeable public car park in the centre of the village (with an electric charge point, which we always appreciate!) and the village itself was easy to walk around even with a pushchair.

Aldeburgh

Aldeburgh is a pretty seaside town with a thriving high street, lovely big beach and famous fish and chips! We were surprised how busy it was but actually on the beach was significantly quieter than the town itself. Because it was busy we didn’t get to explore that much but the girls were so thrilled to be on the beautiful beach and in the sea – the weather was gorgeous so it was a lovely way to spend a few hours.

Felixstowe

We almost didn’t visit Felixstowe but as it was so close to where we were staying we popped there for the afternoon. I’m so glad we did! 100% your traditional seaside town, Felixstowe has arcades, beach huts, fish and chip shops and a little amusement park. Pretty much everything my children want in life! We ended up staying there much longer than planned and we had a thoroughly good time.

Thorpeness

Thorpeness is easy to see on the same day as Aldeburgh as they are next to each other (it’s actually possible to walk between the two). If you do drive though, there was easy access to parking in Thorpeness.

We had a nice couple of hours there, enjoying the beach (which was slightly sandier than Aldeburgh) and an ice cream. We also saw the upside down house from a distance!

Framlingham Castle

Framlingham Castle is an English Heritage site in central Suffolk and is a wonderful place to spend a few hours. If you have English Heritage membership you get in for free but we don’t so paid £32 for a family ticket. We did the wall walk, looked around the small museum and had lunch from the Cafe. The weather was glorious and it was a really nice place to visit. It’s also the inspiration for Ed Sheeran’s Castle on the Hill – he grew up in Framlingham.

Helmingham Hall

We had tickets to the Great British Food Festival at Helmingham Hall and loved spending time exploring the amazing grounds and gardens.

Helmingham Hall hosts a number of events, as well as a tea room and tickets for the gardens. The house itself is privately owned. Check out there website here for further details.

Summary

We had a fantastic 7 days in Suffolk and it was lovely to explore a part of the country that we’d not been to before. We found that there was so much to do, and more that we didn’t find time for – so we will be back again for certain!
