Long haul flights can be a daunting experience, especially when you have kids in tow. The thought of keeping them entertained and comfortable for hours on end can be overwhelming. In this article, we will share some valuable tips and tricks to make your long haul flights with kids a breeze. Read on for A Complete Guide to Surviving Long Haul Flights with Kids.
Choose the Right Flight
When planning a long haul flight with kids, it’s crucial to select the right flight that suits their schedule and temperament. Consider booking flights that align with your child’s sleep patterns, minimising disruption to their routine. Non-stop flights are generally preferable as they reduce the stress of connecting flights and layovers. We definitely felt this on our flights from London to Seoul and back recently. Our flight out started early in the day and went through the night, resulting in us being confused by bedtime and already out of whack with our time zones – this made sleep very difficult. On the way back we started out flight at night and it worked so much better as we knew we needed to sleep pretty much as soon as we got on board.
Pack Essential Carry-On Items
Packing strategically is key to ensuring a smooth journey with kids. Here are some essential carry-on items to consider:
a. Snacks: Pack a variety of healthy snacks that your kids enjoy. This will help keep them satisfied throughout the flight. Avoid chocolate as this melts and can cause more trouble than its worth.
b. Entertainment: Bring a mix of activities such as colouring books, puzzles, small toys, or electronic devices loaded with their favourite games or movies. For most long-haul flights now there is an excellent onboard entertainment system, but remember to bring the children’s headphones if they won’t be able to use the in-ear ones provided by the airline.
c. Comfort Items: Don’t forget to pack their favourite blanket, stuffed animal, or pillow for added comfort during the flight.
d. Change of Clothes: Accidents can happen, so having an extra set of clothes for your child (and yourself) can be a lifesaver. My youngest spilt blueberry juice everywhere on a recent flight so space trousers came in handy.
Dress Comfortably
Dressing your kids in comfortable clothing is essential for long haul flights. Opt for loose-fitting clothes made of breathable fabrics. Layers are also a good idea, as the temperature on the plane can vary. Additionally, consider bringing socks and shoes that are easy to slip on and off for comfort and convenience during security checks and in-flight. I generally recommend the girls wear their crocs on flights – especially as they need to put on their shoes easily for trips to the toilet.
Pre-Boarding Preparation
Arrive at the airport early to avoid any last-minute rush. Use this time to explain a bit about flying to your kids – especially if it’s their first time or if it’s their first long haul flight. Talk about security checks, staying seated during take-off and landing, and the importance of wearing seat belts. Pre-boarding can also be an opportunity to let your kids burn off some energy before the flight by walking around the terminal, we have done that many times and it works!
Stay Hydrated and Snack Smart
Dehydration is common during flights, so it’s essential to keep your kids hydrated. Pack refillable water bottles and ask the flight attendants to fill them up as needed. Avoid excessive amounts of sugary drinks and opt for water or diluted juices instead. As for snacks, stick to healthy options such as granola bars, or dry cereal, which can help sustain their energy levels and prevent them from getting too hungry. As a rule I avoid anything with nuts in it as sometimes there is a blanket ‘no nuts’ rules on planes if someone has an allergy.
Plan Activities and Breaks
Keeping kids occupied during long flights is essential to avoid restlessness and boredom. Plan a variety of activities to keep them engaged. Consider interactive games, books, or even a travel journal where they can draw and write about their experiences. Take regular breaks to stretch their legs and walk up and down the aisle.
Maintain a Positive Attitude
Children often pick up on their parents’ stress and emotions. Maintain a positive and calm attitude throughout the flight, even if unexpected challenges arise. Be patient, understanding, and flexible, as this will help create a more relaxed environment for everyone. I appreciate this can be hard but it really helps.
Conclusion
Long haul flights with kids don’t have to be a dreaded experience. By planning ahead, packing strategically, and keeping your children entertained and comfortable, you can transform a long flight into an enjoyable adventure for the whole family. Embrace the journey, make lasting memories, and arrive at your destination ready to explore the world together. Happy travels!
