A week in Lake Garda, Italy
Thank you for coming to read our blog ‘A week in Lake Garda, Italy.’
Why Lake Garda?
We decided on a trip to Lake Garda in Italy. It had long been on our list and felt like a very manageable trip to do with an 11 month old.
We flew with British Airways from London Gatwick to Verona and arrived late in the evening. The caravan was extremely cold but as it was dark and late we just settled the baby and got some sleep. We hoped we could sort out the heating situation in the morning.
Where we stayed
When we woke the next morning we were greeted with a beautiful view of Lake Garda from our terrace. Once we’d sorted out the heating (it was late September so ok during the day but chilly at night), we were ready to explore.
The Eurocamp park we stayed in was called Eden Camp. It was one of the smaller camps around the lake. The Eurocamp cabins were in a prime spot within the park and we had a great view of the lake and it wasn’t too crowded by other cabins.
We did notice some of the other areas in the park looked very cramped. We’d have been very unhappy in those (they were through other tour agencies not Eurocamp). The cabin itself was small (2 bedrooms) but the facilities were good for children. A cot, baby bath, stair gate was provided. Really though, the highlight was the view and we had bbq’s on the deck every evening.
The park was on a steep incline (hence the amazing view!) so worth bearing in mind if you have limited mobility. It was fine as we didn’t really stay in the park during the day and just drove to and from the cabin usually, avoiding the hefty climb. As our daughter was only 11 months old at the time we didn’t utilise the facilities in the park. However there was a swimming pool, play area and activities that older children would love.
What to do around Lake Garda
Lake Garda and the area around it is swamped with things to do. We didn’t struggle at all to entertain ourselves for the week.
We took a day trip to Verona to have an explore. Obviously we had to visit the famous Juliet balcony (which was actually fairly nondescript!) It’s a beautiful city though and we spent a lovely day there. We went up the Torre Dei Lamberti tower for great views over the city. Then we walked around the Arena Di Verona, the incredible Roman Amphitheatre.
A lot of our time was spent taking ferries to different parts of the lake. These were regular and easy to use, and our daughter loved them – she even went on her very first paddle steamer!
Final thoughts?
We had a great time in Lake Garda, there really is so much to do and everywhere felt child friendly. With older children you’d be even more spoilt for choice. There are theme parks and so on that they would love. But for us it was just a nice way to spend a week with our baby.
