Everybody’s Talking About Jamie The Musical – A Review

Introduction
Everybody’s Talking About Jamie, the sensational musical that has taken the theatre world by storm, is a captivating and uplifting experience that leaves audiences raving. From its infectious energy to its powerful messages, it’s an absolute must see. We went to watch Everybody’s Talking about Jamie during their run at the New Victoria Theatre in Woking.
Storyline
At the heart of the true story of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a compelling and relatable storyline that follows the journey of Jamie New (in real life his name is Jamie Campbell), a teenager with dreams of becoming a drag queen.
Jamie decides that he wants to wear a dress to his school Prom. A decision that is met with some derision from his school and his father. But he persists, and what follows is a tale of self-discovery, love, and courage. The musical sticks closely to the storyline depicted in the Documentary that sparked its creation, even down to particular things that were said.
Show-Stopping Performances
The cast of Everybody’s Talking About Jamie delivers incredible performances that bring the characters to life with authenticity and flair. Finton Flynn, the understudy who played Jamie New, was nothing short of sensational, capturing the essence of the character’s determination and charisma. His mother played by Rebecca McKinnis was outstanding and no doubt brought many of the audience to tears with her incredible performance. The star-studded cast includes Giovanna Fletcher as Miss Hedge, John Partridge as Hugo/Loco Chanel and Shobna Gulati as the loveable Ray.
Music and Lyrics
One of the standout features of this musical is its unforgettable score composed by Dan Gillespie Sells, with lyrics by Tom MacRae. The soundtrack is one of my all-time favourite musical soundtracks and each and every song is a hit. From emotionally resonant ballads to toe-tapping tunes I am still singing them the next day (and I’m sure for much much longer!)
So what’s it trying to tell us….
The message behind the Musical is Everybody’s Talking About Jamie is a celebration of individuality and inclusivity, sending a powerful message about embracing your true self. As the finale song says ‘Be Individual. Don’t act so same-y’. And I couldn’t put it better myself! This won’t be the last time I see this show, it’s without a shadow of a doubt one of my favourites.
