3 Days in the Faroe Islands with Kids
When it comes to epic family adventures, few places can rival the Faroe Islands. Located in the North Atlantic Ocean, this remote archipelago offers breathtaking natural beauty, dramatic landscapes, and a unique cultural experience. If you’re planning a family getaway, consider spending 3 days exploring the Faroe Islands with your kids. In this travel blog, we’ll guide you through what we did over 3 days in the Faroe Islands with Kids.
Arrival in Vagar Airport
Your Faroe Islands adventure begins with a flight into Vágar Airport. An absolutely tiny airport, and the flight into land is stunning (if the weather allows!) We had an Airbnb 8-minute drive away, so we collected our car (a quick and easy process) and headed to our accommodation.
Explore Tórshavn
We spent our first day exploring the charming capital city, Tórshavn. The wooden houses, grass roofs and tiny parliamentary area of Tinganes is a must see. We also walked up to the lighthouse where you can see the big ferries and also some of the cannons used during the War by the British who stationed themselves in the Faroe Islands.
We then headed to the tiny shopping centre in Torshavn for lunch and to top up on food supplies for our stay. There are actually plenty of supermarkets in the Faroe Islands so unless you are staying in a completely remote area you shouldn’t have to drive too far to get to one. Our nearest was just over 10 minutes away and had everything we needed. However, if you want to buy alcohol this is sold in special shops so its easier to buy it on arrival at the airport.
Exploring Vágar Island
One of the must see’s in the Faroe Islands is the stunning Mulafossur Waterfall in Gasadalur village. The short walk to the waterfall is easy with kids, and the view of the waterfall is gorgeous. Try to visit when the sky is clear, but I expect it’s beautiful at any time.
Beaches
We found that there was a number of little laybys that we could park in and then go to the sea for a paddle (the water in August was extremely cold mind you!) The girls loved it and spent a number of hours building sandcastles from the black sand and jumping the gentle waves.
Airbnb
Our Airbnb had resident ducks so whenever we were back there we would pop out to feed them. It was a highlight of the stay for the girls. Our Airbnb was remote but within easy reach of the amenities. It was a two twin bed grass roofed house, built by the owner himself. It was stunning and we spent a good amount of time just in and around the house admiring the scenery.
Eysturoy
On the way to Gjogv we drove over the hills on Eysturoy Island and stopped at the top, above the clouds, for a car boot picnic with just the sheep for company. As we ate the clouds dispersed and we saw a lake just below us.
Gjogv
Next we headed to Gjogv which is known to be one of the most beautiful of the Faroese villages. We headed to the Cleft of Gjogv where there is stunning cliffs and views out to sea. We didn’t walk up onto the cliffs with the children but it is an option. We then headed to the church to take some photos.
Klaksvik
On the way back to our Airbnb we stopped in KlaksvÃk and whilst there wasn’t a lot to see we had the most delicious hot chocolate and cakes at Frida Kaffihus at the harbour.
More Vagar Island
On our last morning the sky was clear and beautiful so we went for a bit of a drive around Vagar Island, popped to a local beach and watched a plane take off from the unique airport.
Conclusion:
A family adventure in the Faroe Islands is a once-in-a-lifetime experience that your kids will treasure forever. From captivating waterfalls to scenic hikes and charming villages, the Faroe Islands offer endless opportunities for exploration. We felt 2 full days and 3 nights was just perfect to explore with kids and we’re so pleased we went.
